Off The Market

This weekend I was in Boston...well Quincy... for my best friends bridal shower. It was good. Typical shower, she plowed through the gifts while I wrote down the names of whatever relative gave her whichever towel. I drank a mimosa for some social lube. She was happy, I was happy for her. We ate scrod.

After the shower we brought all of her gifts back to her house and hung out. I was filled in on her honeymoon plans. London, Spain, Morrocco. I was shown her bridal shoes, veil, underwear. all fun. But I started thinking...how is it we go through all this planning for the one day which, in reality, is a celebration to take ourselves off of the market. For good. Thats it. No more sex with strangers. Kind of weird. Yeah, Yeah, its not about that, it about a celebration of love and all that good stuff. sure, Adam and I have been married for 2 years in October. I wouldnt change it. It's great being married...the ups- the downs- the adventures. We've been through a lot since 2000. He's my best friend...the best-est friend I've ever had. Which makes him a damn good husband.

So, back to the point, as we were sitting in a Quincy bar last night...bride and her 2 bridesmaids(or matrons i guess)....all with rings on...discussing what shade of blue parasols and red lipstick we would wear on her wedding day, we started talking about the whole "off the market" concept. Honestly, it is a little sad, but married doesn't equal dead, and that at times, looking (I said LOOKING) around is fun. It adds something to the current status quo. It's actually good for marriages. So I raised my pint glass and toasted the soon to be Mrs. and said "Cheers to a happy life together and the hopes that you always have a harmless crush on the side just for fun." We all laughed, and threw back 8 IPAs each over the next 3 hours, called our significant others, and went home. It was a good night.
